Two Types of Gold IRA Rollovers
Your existing custodian (401k plan administrator or IRA custodian) transfers funds directly to your new Gold IRA custodian. You never receive the money โ it moves institution to institution. No taxes withheld, no 60-day deadline, no risk of accidental distribution. This is the safest method and what your Gold IRA company will help you execute.
Your existing custodian sends you a check for the rollover amount (minus 20% tax withholding). You then have 60 days to deposit the full original amount (including the withheld 20%) into your new Gold IRA. If you miss the 60-day window, the amount is treated as a distribution โ subject to income tax plus 10% early withdrawal penalty if under 59ยฝ. You can only do one indirect rollover per 12-month period.

Frequently Asked Questions
Direct rollovers typically take 2โ4 weeks from start to finish: 1โ3 days to open the new Gold IRA, 5โ10 business days for your old custodian to process the transfer, 1โ5 business days to receive funds at the new custodian, then 1โ5 business days to purchase metals and ship to the depository. Your Gold IRA company handles most of this process for you.
Only if your current employer's 401k plan allows in-service distributions or rollovers โ not all plans do. You must be at least 59ยฝ for most plans to allow in-service withdrawals. Check your plan documents or ask your HR department. If not allowed, wait until you leave the employer โ then a rollover is freely available.
