How to Negotiate Debt Settlement Yourself
To settle debt, most creditors need accounts to be significantly delinquent (90โ180 days past due). Start saving the money you'd normally pay creditors into a dedicated savings account. This creates the lump sum you'll offer as settlement.
After 3โ6 months of missed payments, creditors or collection agencies will contact you. This is your negotiating window โ creditors are most motivated to settle when accounts are in collections.
Start low โ offer 25โ35 cents on the dollar as your opening offer. Creditors typically want 40โ60 cents. Counter their counter with 35โ45 cents. Many creditors accept 40โ50 cents for credit card debt. Get any agreement in writing BEFORE making payment.
Never make a payment without a written settlement agreement that states: the settlement amount, that it's payment in full, and that the account will be reported as 'settled' or 'settled for less than full amount' to the credit bureaus. Verbal agreements are not enforceable.

Start at 25โ30% of the total balance owed. This gives you room to negotiate up. If the creditor asks for 60%, counter with 35โ40%. Most credit card settlements land between 40โ55% of the original balance. The older the debt and the further in collections, the lower they'll typically accept.
Yes โ if someone co-signed your debt, they remain fully responsible for the original balance unless the settlement agreement explicitly releases them. Settling one-party's portion typically does not release a co-signer. The co-signer's credit is also affected by the missed payments and settlement notation.
